A Photo Essay by Cont Mhlanga

It’s a week end the 8th of October 2007 in Bulawayo and the kids on the picture are from Caudrey Park in Luveve township and have no where to play and develop to be full responsible citizens. They how ever don’t have to go far to play in the rubbish dump site as the City Council of Bulawayo, in this now failed state of Zimbabwe has no fuel to collect rubbish from homes. As you can see in the picture the rubbish dump is now half blocking the road in front of the houses. The council fleet is completely grounded because of fuel and spare parts.

The City Health Department is under staffed and cannot even afford to offer citizens alternative solid waste management programs. The Ministry of Local Government is on the news in their own media every day with heap of lies with the politically motivated Garikai/Hlalani kuhle (Live Well) housing program that they initiated after realizing that they had created a big blander with Operation Murambatswina. ( Clean Up All Dirt) Ironically Caudrey Park is where Garikai is being implemented by government while on the other end rubbish blocks driveways and streets in the same township.

I don’t need to tell you what dangers this condition and environment can do to these kids. It is such conditions that should be changed by those in power and if they cannot change them why do they bother to want to run for office again? The reason is that they want power to empower themselves while the majority of the people live in these conditions. Why else would they want to run for public office when they can’t guarantee the delivery of this essential service to the community?

Are children of cabinet ministers and members of parliament playing in the same conditions as well?

Now jokes aside and being liberation war heroes aside, if we will continue to let our citizens live under such terrible conditions just because we fought for this country. Incase you have forgotten comrades we called for a cease fire 27 years ago and put guns down so that we could deliver such crucial services to the nation and not to ourselves and our families only.

Did we fight so that kids would play in rubbish dumps that are almost blocking the roads? Lets get serious comrades!
